James Spare, President and CEO

Mr. Spare's expertise is in successfully launching new, innovative technology products and companies. He leverages his prior experience in product management, marketing, and business development to lead the Canesta team.

Previously, Mr. Spare served as business development director for the Microsoft TV Platform Division where his team created and managed key alliances with OEMs and network operators including AT&T, Rogers Communications, and Motorola. In this role, Mr. Spare was a key driver of Microsoft's investments and strategic product plan for the cable and satellite industry in North America.

Prior to Microsoft, Mr. Spare led a product management organization at General Instrument (now Motorola) that exceeded sales and profit expectations for the company's flagship line of new, interactive set-top boxes. His team grew the business from concept to $300Million in revenue in less than 3 years, propelling the business to the highest grossing and most profitable product line in the company.

Most recently, Mr. Spare served as chief operating officer of INBOXTV Corporation where he managed marketing, engineering, business development and operations for this Internet startup. Mr. Spare holds an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and a BSEE from North Carolina State University.

Dr. Cyrus Bamji, CTO and Co-Founder

Dr. Bamji is a founder of Canesta. He has 9 years of industry experience working in Electronic Design Automation. Previously he held the position of Architect, at Cadence Design Systems. He has an SB in Math, SB in CS, SM and Ph.D. in EECS all from MIT.

He has interest in and is conversant with a wide variety of technical disciplines including Physics, Math, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science. His work in the area of hierarchical layout compaction has produced a quantum improvement in the state of the art in this area and is recognized as a landmark achievement. He is the author of over 15 conference papers and journal articles presented at top rated IEEE Conferences. Of these papers, three have won the best paper award at their respective conferences. He is the inventor of 19 granted patents, with many more pending. He is also the author of a book on Leaf Cell and Hierarchical Compaction Techniques. At Canesta Dr. Bamji is involved in the design and implementation of next generation high performance time of flight detectors and pixels.

Abbas Rafii, EVP and Co-Founder

Dr. Rafii is Executive Vice President and one of the founders of Canesta, Inc. He has extensive background in system engineering and business management. His current focus is directing the system architecture group, evaluating customer solutions and developing image processing algorithms for the company's electronic perception technology. Earlier, he directed the development of Projection Keyboard application. He received his MS and Ph.D. in EECS from Stanford University.

He was a founder and held the position of Vice President in Penware and atPos (now part of Symbol). He recruited the team and directed the design and development of the company's PDA, Point of Service, enterprise, and e-commerce applications. He provided technical support in closing large deals and started several technology and business development initiatives in the company.

Earlier, he was a software scientist and an architect of heterogeneous object databases at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. Prior to that, he was a system performance specialist at Hewlett-Packard's commercial and UNIX operating systems labs. He has published papers on 3D vision applications, system performance analysis and heterogeneous databases. He has also taught Computer Science at University of Oklahoma, U.C. Davis and Santa Clara University. He has authored and been granted several patents.

Pat O'Connor, VP, Engineering PSBU

Mr. O'Connor joined Canesta from Parthus Technologies where he served as Platform Director for the company's InfoStream ARM 920T based SoC I.P. platform. There, he managed an engineering team based in San Jose, Austin, Texas and Dublin, Ireland and was responsible for all hardware and software IP development for the platform and direct support of InfoStream customers in the U.S. and Europe.

Prior to joining Parthus, Mr. O'Connor spent four years with Aureal Semiconductor in Fremont. There he served as Director of Consumer Products, where he was responsible for development of highly integrated mixed signal ASICs and digital signal processors and research and development in audio signal processing algorithms for consumer audio such as karaoke and home theatre effects. Before that, Mr. O'Connor held engineering positions at Analog Devices, Connexant and National Semiconductor, concentrating in design and development of highly integrated mixed signal ASICs for the consumer and mobile communications markets.

Mr. O'Connor holds a BSEE from Dublin Institute of Technology and University of Dublin, Trinity College.

Tim Droz, VP, Engineering ESBU

Mr. Droz' expertise is in program execution and delivery of hardware and software systems. He brings his industry background and experience to Canesta to deliver CanestaVision technology into the marketplace worldwide.

Previously, Mr. Droz served as Sr. Director of Engineering at Cylink Corporation (now SafeNet) where his team developed and supported Cylink's core LAN and WAN hardware encryption products into multinational finance and government institutions. Prior to Cylink, Mr. Droz led hardware development efforts in embedded and web-based signature capture payment terminals at @POS.com. Mr. Droz also held engineering positions at EDJ Enterprises and IBM, concentrating in design and development of network infrastructure products and store-system (point-of-sale) products.

Mr. Droz holds an MSEE from North Carolina State University and a BSEE from the Unversity of Virginia.

Lou Kordus ||, VP, Manufacturing Operations

Mr. Kordus has 24 years of semiconductor industry experience in product operations, product development, manufacturing, and design. Prior to coming to Canesta Mr. Kordus was a Founder and the VP of Operations at Cswitch Corporation which developed high performance reconfigurable products for the telecommunication market. At Cswitch, Mr. Kordus was responsible for development of important CMOS technologies as well as manufacturing operations.

Mr. Kordus also worked at Transmeta Corporation where he was responsible for ramping manufacturing and helping the company transition from a startup company to a public company via a successful IPO. Mr. Kordus’ experience also includes Texas Instruments, Motorola, and Sun Microsystems working on a range of products from high volume microcontrollers to high performance microprocessors targeted at various markets including personal computers, servers, and automotive.

David Garret, CFO

Mr. Garrett is a CPA and MBA with 30 years of broad financial experience in Silicon Valley’s high-tech industry. He started his career with four years at Price Waterhouse in San Jose, followed by four years at Fairchild Semiconductor. He then became CFO of several high tech start-ups including Kalpana, Inc. which was acquired by Cisco in 1994 for $220M, and Epigram which was acquired by Broadcom in 1999 for $310M. Following the Kalpana acquisition, David was Director of Financial Reporting at Cisco for two years managing its financial reporting, consolidation and general accounting departments. Following the Epigram acquisition, David was a due diligence investigator helping Broadcom examine and acquire several start ups. Prior to joining Canesta, David was CFO of Cswitch Corp and CFO of Keyeye Communications, both fabless semiconductor start ups. David has a BS degree in Accounting and an MBA degree from Florida State University.
